Kieran

Kieran Akerson: The inspiration behind the Takedown

The inspiration behind the wrestling tournament is Kieran Akerson of Valley, Nebraska.  As a youngster, Kieran was a multiple-time state wrestling champion. In late 2020 at age 12, he was diagnosed with brain cancer (low grade glioma/astrocytoma). After a successful 11-hour tumor resection surgery and inpatient rehabilitation he was on the road to recovery. There is residual tumor that is being monitored closely and another surgery in the future in probable. Remarkably, Kieran is a three-time Class A State medalist for Creighton Prep!

After being directly affected by childhood brain cancer and learning of the lack of funding and outdated treatments, Kieran’s family started the annual charity wrestling tournament, Takedown the Tumor. Funds from the tournament benefit Team Jack and our Brain Tumor Program at UNMC and Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jack with ESPY

In 2013, Jack Hoffman scored a touchdown in the Nebraska Spring Game, and won an ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports.
