The Inspiration Behind Takedown the Tumor Nationals

The idea for the tournament came from the family of Kieran Akerson, a 12-year-old boy that was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2020. Kieran, from Valley, Nebraska, is a multi-time state champion wrestler who got started in the sport at age five. Following his tumor resection surgery and rehabilitation, Kieran was able to return to the mat this spring. The proceeds from the event will benefit Team Jack’s Childhood Brain Tumor Program at UNMC and Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

As a mother, I wanted to do more and decided to combine three of my greatest loves…my child, wrestling, and making a difference in this world. With the help of OMAWA, Team Jack, and the generosity of sponsors…our dream has become a reality. Please consider joining us in making a difference in the lives of children diagnosed with brain cancer.

Marie Akerson

Kieran's Mom

The event is coordinated and managed by Omaha Metro Area Wrestling Association, a nonprofit based in Omaha, NE that is committed to being a catalyst for elevating youth wrestling in our state.  Learn more at Omawa.org.
